Abstract
Best Possible Self is a popular, well-researched positive psychological intervention. Previous research showed its efficacy in enhancing positive affect and optimism through written and visualisation methods. However, no prior study has explored the use of collage to augment these benefits. The aim of this study was to address this gap in the research literature by investigating the use of self-made collage as a primer for the Best Possible Self intervention. Fifteen participants took part in this qualitative intervention study. The procedure was introduced to the participants in four steps: (1) collecting images to create their self-made collage, (2) guiding the participants through gathering their images and the composition of their collage using the Collage Coaching Technique (Watts, 2022), (3) introducing the Best Possible Self-writing activity and writing about their Best Possible Self for fifteen minutes every other day for fourteen days, and (4) taking part of a semi-structured interview at the end of the intervention. Data was collected during interviews and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The reflexive thematic analysis resulted in the construction of three main themes: (1) Rest, Creativity, and Play; (2) Raising Self-Awareness; and (3) A Transformational Journey.

Findings indicated that self-made collages are a non-threatening, engaging medium fostering deeper self-exploration and heightened self-awareness. The results offer relevant insights for incorporating creative, arts-based methods to enrich traditional positive psychology intervention practices.

The findings supported the potential benefits of self-made collages as a more holistic and accessible pathway to psychological well-being when using the Best Possible Self-intervention.
